Bagalkot was a part of undivided Bijapur District. In 1997 the new district formed as bagalkot district suppurating from Bijapur district with Bagalkot as district head quarter. But bagalkot is also an old town. Many temples around validates the same. In the bagalkot town the change dev temple or yamanurappa temple was previously located in the bank of ghataprbha river in old bagalkot but now its shifted to navanagar near RTO office due to rehabilitation of upper Krishna project. Shri kottaleshwara in killa bagalkot, Shri tulasigirishwara in tulasigari, achanurappa in achanur and shri maruteshwar on the hilltop at shirur are the major hanuman temples in the region. Mallikarjun temple in mallapur just near to bagalkot is a small picnic spot for people around. Konamma devi temple and gouri shankara ashrama near kirasur are the notable temples in bagalkot rural. 11th century shri siddeshwara temple complex and lake in the shirur village and ancient shiva temple in the bevur village are the ancient chalukyan temples near bagalkot.
